DI Mervin Wilson joined the Death In Paradise team this year as Don Gilet signed up for the lead role in the BBC detective drama – but will he stay?

DI Mervin Wilson has been desperate to get off Saint Marie in Death In Paradise. Don Gilet plays the new Detective Inspector, who has replaced DI Neville Parker when Ralf Little quit the BBC show last year.

Mervin has been adamant he wants to leave the island, insisting he had only been there briefly. However, he has grown quite friendly with the whole team – and soon realised there was one special case he needed to solve first – his mother’s death.

Now he knows the truth about what happened to Donna Bray, Mervin has decided he will head back home to London to carry on with his life, having finally had a chance to bury his mother and say his goodbyes.

On tonight’s episode, Mervin decided to visit his mum’s grave to think through on whether he’d stay on the island. “I need some advice on something mum, staying in Saint Marie on a more permanent basis – bad idea right?

“It just doesn’t seem like a good fit,” he said as he stood by the grave, before noting that there was a new note there and some flowers.

“Rest in peace, S,” the note read, leaving Mervin puzzled as he wasn’t sure who ‘S’ was. He had looked through his mum’s address book and phone to try and find out and also quizzed if it was Selwyn who had left the flowers.

Later, it transpired that the flowers were left there by a man called Solomon Clark, who was looking for her a few months ago in Antigua and was told she had died by Donna’s former neighbour.

At the end of the episode, as part of his final thing to do on the island, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson stopped by the police station to speak to Mervin as well as say his goodbyes.

Mervin explained he’d still be leaving, telling Selwyn: “Well now I’ve wrapped this up, I can finally leave with a clear conscience. I suppose I’d give the keys to you now right?”

Selwyn then stopped him dead in his tracks by revealing: “Earlier today, I took the liberty of contacting Solomon Clark. Because you are still here. And that door is still open. Perhaps I overstepped but I thought you can’t let an opportunity like this pass you by.”

“Commissioner, with respect, as I said, I am done here,” Mervin then said, with Selwyn adding: “I believe this might change your mind. This is Solomon’s number, you should call it. Mervin, he’s your brother.”

By the end of the episode, it looked like Mervin had decided to stay on the island now he knows he has a brother nearby. But will the pair have a chance to meet next series and grieve their mother’s death?
